Moldy bakelite analog was a guess when I wrote it, but when I checked, found that there had been special mold resistant bakelite made, presumably to avoid just this kind of thing. Tropical conditions were often not kind to wooden aircraft as well, though not a factor here. Paper in the fuel tank is a simple but effective bit of sabotage, the paper would not nessisarily break down in the fuel, but any water would get at it in time. My Father's fishing boat had mystery paper towel bits in the gas tank that ended up in the lines and filters.
